Radar rainfall monitoring system for railway operations management
Services
A System that Utilizes Observed Weather Radar Information to Detect Localized Heavy Rainfall Along Railway Lines, Contributing to Enhanced Railway Safety
With the recent climate change, rainfall patterns have become more localized and more intense, raising concerns that scattered railway rain gauges alone are insufficient to accurately capture localized heavy rainfall that occurs frequently. Therefore, Japan Weather Association utilizes the most advanced weather radar (XRAIN*1) and radar/raingauge-analyzed precipitation*2 to carefully observe rainfall along railway lines, and capture localized heavy rainfall. The radar rainfall monitoring system allows for simultaneous monitoring of rainfall and warnings (state of exceeding regulation values) at command and maintenance sections. It is the system that enables centralized management of warnings, supporting actual operations.
XRAIN (*1)
Composite of rainfall observed by the X-band MP radar and C-band MP radar of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan.
Radar/Raingauge-Analyzed Precipitation (*2)
Rainfall observed by weather radar corrected using ground-based rainfall measurements from AMeDAS and other sources.
Radar rainfall monitoring system for railway operations management
Features
・Rainfall along railway lines (hourly and continuous rainfall) is calculated for each kilometer based on radar/raingauge-analyzed precipitation and XRAIN, and the exceedance of regulatory values is evaluated at each railway kilometer post or in each restricted operation section.
・Alert notifications are sent to pop-up screens, audio, and indicator lights when rainfall along railway lines exceeds regulatory values.
・Rainfall and warning conditions along railway lines can be checked at a glance through a screen displaying a list, etc.
・Data from rain gauges of railroad operators can be incorporated into the system.
