Sustainability

Message from the Director General

The impacts of climate change, including global warming, are becoming increasingly evident in our daily lives. One indication of this is the introduction of the term “Kokusho-bi” (days of extreme heat) for days with temperatures of 40°C or higher. Under these circumstances, efforts to achieve carbon neutrality are urgently needed. Equally important are responses and measures to address the impacts of climate change on our daily lives and social activities. Together with the need to respond to increasingly serious population, food, and energy challenges, these global-scale developments are driving major transformations in human activities.
Against this backdrop, the concept of “sustainability” has become deeply familiar to us. In 2015, Japan Weather Association (JWA) set out its corporate mission of “creating a society harmonized with the natural world,” and coined the term “Harmonability” to express this mission succinctly.
“Harmonability” is aligned with the concept of “sustainability” and serves as a keyword that expresses, in a single term, JWA’s commitment to advancing a sustainable society.
To help realize “Harmonability,” JWA will make every possible contribution to initiatives aimed at achieving Japan’s goal of net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.

Efforts to achieve the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)

JWA supports the “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.
SDGs are the international goals under “the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, which was adopted at the UN Summit in September 2015. It consists of 17 goals and 169 targets, pledging that “no one will be left behind”.

Efforts toward recommendations of TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures)

JWA agreed to a “Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD)” in February 2021.
We will utilize our expert knowledge and skills in the areas of meteorology and the environment to promote analysis and reduction of climate change risks associated with business activities, and implement activities aimed at a decarbonized society.
