Aiming to Reduce the Number of Fall Accidents on Winter Roads

As part of Japan Weather Association’s efforts to reduce fall accidents, the TsuruTsuru Forecast has been available from November every year since 2007, in collaboration with Sapporo Information Network Co., Ltd. The web site is operated by the Winter Life Promotion Council to raise awareness of fall risks and mitigation to prevent accidents on snowy and icy winter roads.

Features

• Predictions on how slippery the sidewalks of Sapporo will be and alert the users with a three-level system.
• The three-level system is based on weather forecast data from the current day’s evening to the next day (temperature, snowfall, snow accumulation), and road surface observation for sidewalks and crosswalks from 3 locations in Sapporo from 7:00 to 10:00 the next day.

• The ‘TsuruTsuru Forecast is available on the [Walk Smart] site.

• Available from late November to mid-March the following year.
• It covers the time from 17:00 every day until 10:00 the following day and is updated at 17:00 every day.
＊Additional updates depending on road conditions.
• TsuruTsuru Forecast covers the city of Sapporo in Hokkaido.

Special Achievements

• The TsuruTsuru Forecast won the Technology Award from the Japan Society of Snow Engineering in 2019.
• The Hokkaido Branch of Japan Weather Association received a letter of appreciation from the Winter Life Promotion Council on the 18th October, 2022.
• We are now inviting offers for ‘TsuruTsuru Forecast Information’. On the mobile website, users can post information about road conditions in Sapporo. The posted information will be used as a reference for the Tsurutsuru Forecast.
