Forecast information for ice and snow formation on railway overhead lines
Services
A JWA Integrated Weather Forecast “JWA Blend of Models” offers detailed forecasts for formation of ice and snow on overhead wires
This information is designed to support the implementation of effective countermeasures against ice and snow formation on railway overhead lines, ensuring the safe operation of rail services for passengers.
The formation of ice and snow on railway overhead lines can be caused by four distinct weather phenomena: frost formation, snow accretion, freezing rain, and ice accretion. Each phenomenon is driven by different weather process. Therefore, accurate forecasting of these events necessitates a precise understanding of the specific weather process that lead to their development. By using the “JWA Blend of Models”, we provide services that support customers’ operational decision-making by forecasting the progression from changes in rain and snow to the occurrence of phenomena. To further enhance forecast accuracy, we install pilot trolley wires and weather observation equipment along the railway lines, especially in areas prone to overhead wire freezing. These installations are complemented by camera monitoring and observations.
Features
By leveraging the “JWA Blend of Models” we provide highly accurate forecasts that clarify the mechanisms through which changes in rain and snow lead to the formation of ice and snow on railway overhead lines. We provide tailored forecasts designed to support our customer’s operational decision-making systems.

Applications
Decisions on preventive measures by railway companies, such as operating de-frosting trains and applying anti-freezing agents.
