The Earliest Blooms On Record In Many Areas

On Thursday, March 23rd, 2023, Japan Weather Association (JWA) announced the forecast of the dates when cherry blossoms will bloom at 84 locations throughout Japan.

Bloom Trends
This year the blossoms have started in Tokyo on March 14th. It is observed that the bloom dates are nearly the earliest bloom since the start of blooming observation in many areas.
On March 22nd in Tokyo, the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. This makes Tokyo the top blooming city in Japan in terms of both blooming and full blossoms. Full blossoms were also observed in Uwajima on March 22nd and in Gifu on 23rd. Although it is expected to have bad weather across the country this weekend, higher temperatures are forecasted to continue and both blooming and full blooming are likely to continue earlier than normal years. Many areas west of Kanto will be in full bloom by the end of March.
The earliest blooms on record will likely to occur in Sendai on March 25th, in Niigata on 28th, and in Aomori on April 11th. In most locations of Hokuriku and Tohoku, the blooms are expected to start 10 days or more earlier than normal. In the second half of April, flowering will finally begin in Hokkaido. It is expected in Hakodate on 22nd, and in Sapporo on 24th.
