Cherry Blossom and Full Bloom Forecast for 2024 (Part 1)
Earlier than normal nationwide bloom, with Tokyo expected on March 19

Japan Weather Association (JWA) released its part 1 forecast for cherry blossoms and full bloom in 83 locations throughout Japan on March 6, 2024.
Trends in blossoming and full bloom
This year’s cherry blossoms are expected to start blooming on March 16th from Uwajima, Ehime prefecture and Sukumo, Kochi prefecture. Sample trees of cherry blossoms at meteorological observatories are expected to bloom in Tokyo and Kochi on the 19th, and on the 20th, blooming will begin in Fukuoka and Matsuyama. The blossoms are likely to spread across a wide area from Kyushu to southern Tohoku by the end of March.
The cherry blossoms are expected to be in full bloom in Tokyo and Uwajima on March 25th, and will be in full bloom over a wide area from Kyushu to Hokuriku by the end of March.
In April, the cherry blossom front will move further north through the Tohoku region, and is expected to bloom in Niigata on April 3rd, in Akita on the 13th and in Aomori on the 18th. By late April, it will reach Hokkaido and will bloom in Sapporo on the 27th.
Temperatures are expected to remain at about normal levels across the country, despite repeated periods of cold and warm temperatures in early March.
From mid- to late-March, temperatures will likely be higher than normal in many places. As a result, cherry blossom buds are expected to grow smoothly, and both blossoming and full bloom are expected to be earlier than normal nationwide, and may even be much earlier than normal in some places.
