New App [tenki.jp Tokyo Raincloud Radar] released.

On July 7, 2020 Japan Weather Association (JWA) launched the new mobile application <tenki.jp Tokyo Raincloud Radar> which utilizes the data from “Multi-Parameter Phased Array Weather Radar (MP-PAWR)”.
This app was published as part of the demonstration experiment in the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Program (SIP) of the Cabinet Office.
MP-PAWR is the weather radar developed by the Cabinet Office’s SIP and is the world’s first practical-use radar equipped with a Phased Array Weather Radar (PAWR) capable of high-speed and three-dimensional observation of rain clouds in 30 seconds to 1 minute, and a multi-parameter radar capable of accurately measuring rainfall.
By enabling early and accurate observation of strong precipitation areas in the sky, it is possible to detect the strong rainfall reaching the ground in a few minutes beforehand.
This app combines the high precision data observed in MP-PAWR and the know-how of tenki.jp, a weather forecasting media provided by JWA, to develop an easy-to-use app that enables anyone to view rapidly developing rain cloud forecasts at a minimum of 1 minute updates.
<tenki.jp Tokyo Raincloud Radar> is the first app to provide a wide range of users with predictive information, using MP-PAWR observation information.
The data used in this app are developed in cooperation with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED).
JWA has been working on the research projects of SIP’s “Enhancement of Societal Resiliency against Natural Disasters”. JWA will continue to put the results obtained through its corporate activities and research activities into practical use to support solving the social issues.

■Multi-Parameter Phased Array Weather Radar (MP-PAWR)
This is a Dual Polarimetric Weather Radar that simultaneously transmits and receives horizontally polarized and vertically polarized waves with phased array antennas.
This radar dramatically improves the accuracy of rainfall measurement while maintaining high-speed three-dimensional observation performance by adding a multi-parameter (dual polarimetric) function to the Phased Array Weather Radar.
One radar is currently owned by NICT and installed at Saitama University and is under test operation.
The observation and prediction range is 60km in radius and 15km above the installation position of the radar, and includes the center of Tokyo, Yokohama, Chiba, Saitama, etc.

This is a free weather forecast media released by JWA. The number of page views per year is 4.5 billion PV (estimated from the total of web page and smartphone applications).
In addition to weather forecasts, you can also check professional weather information and disaster prevention information such as earthquakes and tsunamis. “Daily forecasters” provided by weather forecasters day by day are also popular content.
