JWA 2024 Spring Pollen Dispersion Forecast (Part 2)
~Cedar pollen now dispersing from Kyushu to Tohoku~

On February 21, 2024, Japan Weather Association (JWA) released its 2024 report on spring pollen dispersion forecasts by prefecture and at national level. Nation-wide forecasts of cedar and cypress pollen will be available excluding Hokkaido, while white birch pollen will be provided for Hokkaido.
1. Start of Cedar Pollen Dispersion in 2024
In mid-February, the first spring gale blew in the Kanto, Hokuriku, Shikoku, and Kyushu regions, and the unseasonably warm weather led to the start of cedar pollen dispersion in many areas. The mild winter and unseasonably warm weather this year resulted in cedar pollen dispersing earlier than usual in many areas. In early February, cedar pollen began to be dispersed in all prefectures in Kyushu, Mie, Shizuoka, Yamanashi, and others. In mid-February, cedar pollen began to be dispersed over a wide area from Chugoku and Shikoku to Kanto and Hokuriku regions, as well as in parts of Tohoku.
Temperatures in late February are expected to be normal or lower, while temperatures in March are expected to be normal or higher. Therefore, it is expected that pollen dispersion will begin by early March in the Tohoku and other areas where it has not yet started.
2. Peak Period of Cedar and Cypress Pollen
Cedar pollen will soon reach its peak in Fukuoka and Takamatsu. Pollen dispersion is expected in large quantities on days after rain. Hiroshima, Osaka, Nagoya, Kanazawa, Tokyo, and Sendai will reach their peak in early March. The peak period is expected to last from about 10 days to nearly a month. Particularly on sunny, warm days and windy days, the amount of pollen dispersed increases, therefore, be sure to take all necessary measures against pollen.
Additionally, cypress pollen will peak in many places from late March to early April. In Sendai, the amount of cypress pollen dispersed will be low, and no clear peak is expected to appear.
