The JWA provides highly reproducible weather forecast information, and supports measures against traffic hazards caused by heavy rain, heavy snow and blizzards. The national government, local governments and private-sector organizations maintain and manage roads by paying close attention to the weather conditions, which change from moment to moment. They do so to ensure safe, secure and smooth road traffic. In particular, heavy rain, heavy snow and blizzards are a large cause of accidents and traffic congestion, which hinder smooth and comfortable travel of vehicles. As a result, to prevent traffic hazards before they occur, weather forecast information that is specialized to road management is necessary.
In recent years, there have been sudden visibility hindrances caused by snowfall, heavy snow and blizzards, mainly in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region. The usage of meteorological information in maintaining and managing roads has become more important. For meteorological elements that serve as a factor behind traffic obstacles, the JWA provides detailed point forecasting and information for supporting work decisions at interchanges and rest areas on expressways and at arbitrary, specific points. In addition to providing such information on the Internet for PCs and mobile phones, the information is also available in fax and PC e-mail attachment.

The JWA provides a "voyage plan that minimizes fuel consumption" and "vessel speed plan that ensures punctuality" that take into account the meteorological and oceanographic phenomena that vessels encounter.
Since coastal vessels are for short-distance navigation, it is difficult to achieve fuel consumption reduction effects based on route selection. With ECoRO, however, a voyage plan that can yield high fuel consumption reduction effects even for coastal vessel routes can be realized, since it uses highly precise forecast of meteorological and oceanographic phenomena.

In addition to optimal voyage planning, prediction of oceanographic phenomena (sea surface winds, waves, sea currents) and provision of information on the present state of fogs are carried out. In particular, forecasting of sea currents is recognized favorably by vessels that navigate sea currents due to unparalleled precision and update frequency.
This system is also equipped with a real-time monitoring function for navigation information. Based on this, validation of fuel consumption reduction effects on actual routes and creation of reports are carried out, along with provision of movement monitoring images on the Web.

Bird strike countermeasures

Bird strike can result in missed approaches and rejected takeoffs, cause serious damage of aircraft, and even lead to a massive accident in the worst case. Since the demand for aviation services is rapidly growing and further increases in air traffic are expected among ASEAN countries, the risk of bird strike is a serious issue to be considered. The JWA has developed a bird flight trajectory monitoring system utilizing compact ship radar. It has an algorithm that analyzes observed radar images and shows bird flight trajectories.
